Barrier Enhancements

We have bottles that are designed to accommodate your “hardest-to-hold products.” These bottles are available with a barrier treatment; a post-manufacture process called Fluorination. Fluorination creates a permanent fluorocarbon barrier on all surfaces on the bottles, both inside and out. The bottles are treated at the highest process level available for containers and kept in stock at our Distribution centers. Larger pails and drums, as well as sprayers or closures can also be treated.

About Fluorination

Fluorination of plastic containers increases barrier properties. When exposed, the fluorine gas creates carbon fluorine bonding on the inside and outside surface area, in essence blocking the porous wall of plastic, helping to eliminate or reduce migration of aggressive chemicals.

Fluorination of polyethylene can eliminate or reduce problems from chemical attack including:

  • Permeation
  • Paneling and distortion of the container
  • Softening of container
  • Label blistering
  • Product weight loss
  • Container discoloration
  • Odor emission
  • Flavor, fragrance and/or active ingredient loss

Fluorination of polyethylene can increase:

  • Shelf life
  • Ink wet out
  • Adhesion
  • Closure retention
  • Product integrity

Examples of chemicals that may require fluorination when stored in a polyolefin container:

  • Acetone
  • Insecticides
  • Auto Additives
  • Tricholoroethylene
  • Cleaners
  • Paint Thinners
  • D-Limonene
  • Kerosene
